JLG Architects Announces new Fargo Office
JLG Architects announced the opening of their Fargo, ND office. The Fargo office is being led by their new partner Joel Davy. Joel Davy joins JLG Architects with an impressive career spanning almost 30 years creating notable, award-winning architecture. Joel's understanding of how buildings relate to their neighborhood and surrounding context earned him a variety of national competitions and awards, including Time Magazine's Top Ten Designs of the Year Award. Joel's work includes the Plains Art Museum, the Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering and the Fargo Civic Center's latest addition and renovation. JLG has additional offices in Minneapolis and Grand Forks.
Global Granite & Marble Launches Architectural Division

Global Granite and Marble has launched a new division, Global Architectural Products (GAP). Elliot Uchitelle, managing partner said "There is a demand within the architecture and design community for detailed information about natural stone during the material specification process. GAP will provide architects, design-build firms, masons, general contractors and custom home builders with details such as stone type, coloration, performance, appearance and longevity early in the design phase."
Sam Koontz, a 15-year veteran of both the imported stone and ceramic tile industry, has joined Global Granite and Marble as head of the new division. Before moving to St. Louis, Koontz was director of architectural sales and fulfillment for 12 years for Arizona Tile in Phoenix.
Barry Owenby Joins
New England Stone, LLC
New England Stone, an American granite quarrying/fabrication leader, has recently named William B. "Barry" Owenby as Vice President to promote strategic awareness of New England Stone in design, construction and development in the Mid-Atlantic Region, with a particular emphasis in the Washington, DC Metro area.
Mr. Owenby was most recently the Director of Procurement and Contracting for the American Battle Monuments Commission to support the National World War II Memorial, which was completed ahead of schedule and within budget.
"Mr. Owenby is well suited for this position with a long history of various Federal contracting and senior management positions," said Craig Reynolds, President of New England Stone.
137th AIA National Convention in Las Vegas
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) National Convention and Design Exposition concluded with a record number of architects, exhibitors, and design industry professionals in attendance. Highlights of the convention included the unveiling of the U.S. Postal Service stamp commemorating the Masterworks in Modern Architecture, the airing of the documentary entitled, communitty, a conversation with noted Las Vegas developer Steve Wynn and architect Tony Marnell, and 2005 AIA Gold Medal Winner, Santiago Calatrava, FAIA, closing the general session with remarks that focused on how his work is inspired by the human form, and that architecture is an extension of man and nature.
As of Saturday afternoon, the convention had attracted 24,444 registrants, a record number for the AIA's annual convention and an increase of more than 10% over last year. The number of exhibiting companies at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center reached 860, just slightly higher than the previous year, as the AIA convention staff made a concerted effort to maintain a manageable size of the show in order to ensure a positive experience for the attendees.
The AIA 2005 National Convention and Expo offered more than 150 continuing education workshops and seminars, 100 expo education programs, 60 professional tours, and 50 special events!
Pointer Named NSC Administrative Officer
Long-time industry veteran Duke Pointer was named the Administrative Officer of the Natural Stone Council at the NSC meeting this past May. Pointer will oversee the operations and direction of the organization for the next six months. During this time the NSC will be developing a new branding effort for the natural stone industry and will also be focusing and coordinating the group on existing efforts such as the AIA trade show. Architect Paul Lamb, Continental Cut Stone, Inc. and Escobedo Construction Receive Award
Architect Paul Lamb, Continental Cut Stone and Escobedo Construction, received the grand prize in the Prism Stone in Architecture Award for their Maya House project. The Maya House project is a reflection of ancient Mayan architecture. The project utilized Texas limestone and mortarless construction. The Prism Awards are sponsored by Coverings and the MIA.
